The Wild Sauna @thehillyfield
When we first bought 'the Hillyfield' back in 2009 - a 45acre neglected woodland valley along the river Harbourne on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park - the first thing we brought to the land was a horse-box converted into a wood-fired sauna.
We didn't know that this sauna would probably save our life (as well as provide much needed warmth and sanity for the many hardy woodland workers who have helped us out here on the land over the years), but it did.
Truly - there is a reason Sauna is at the heart of many Nordic cultures - a cultural heritage of Finland, and very much at the heart of our woodland culture of Hillyfield.

Not just being by the fire - feeling the warmth of those thousand suns... connecting to our ancient rhythm of sitting by the fire together with others - the crackle and glow illuminating our bodies. But actually insanely good for our health. According to a Finnish study of several thousand people, regular sauna sessions can decrease 'all cause mortality' by 50%

How 'Wild Sauna' supports the Hillyfield
Our vision is to restore The Hillyfield from the neglect of more than 35years and to directly support 'Woodland Culture' on Dartmoor.
We aim to enhance biodiversity through our work, to promote sustainable rural livelihoods which contribute to the economic and social well-being of the communities we serve and to support learning and skills for sustainable land-management
Sauna membership directly funds a year long trainee in Regenerative Agriculture to join our team, providing them with accommodation, food, and a stipend to support their stay.
All of the wood we burn is grown here at Hillyfield and is harvested as part of an approved woodland management plan under a Higher Tier countryside stewardship agreement.
